Aluminum packaging recycling, italy top in the eu

30 June 2026 eleonora Events 1780

65,000 tons recycled, a 92.8% increase in cans. 460,000 tons of CO2 avoided and 205,000 tons of oil equivalent saved.

ALUMINUM RECYCLING: ITALY LEADS IN EUROPE

Italy remains among the most virtuous countries in Europe in aluminum packaging recycling. In 2025, the national recycling rate reached 69.5%, far exceeding the European target of 50% and five years ahead of the European Union’s 2030 target of 60%.

The data, presented during CIAL’s annual public meeting, highlight the strength of a consolidated supply chain capable of handling increasingly high volumes. Overall aluminum packaging recovery reached 72.9%, confirming a stable average of around 70% recorded in recent years

65,000 TONNES RECYCLED IN 2025

In 2025, 65,000 tons of aluminum packaging were recycled, the highest rate in recent years and a 4.2% increase compared to 2024. The slight decline in the percentage rate compared to 71.4% the previous year is primarily due to the 7% increase in packaging placed on the market and the introduction of new calculation criteria that also include aluminum in composite packaging.

The result for beverage cans is particularly significant. With a recycling rate of 92.8%, an increase of 5.5 percentage points, Italy ranks among the most efficient European countries in the recovery of this type of packaging.

LESS CO2 THANKS TO THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY

The increase in recycling activities has produced significant environmental benefits. In 2025, the recovery of aluminum packaging avoided the emission of approximately 460,000 tons of CO2 equivalent and saved energy equivalent to 205,000 tons of oil equivalent.

The consortium system is also strengthening, with 429 active agreements now covering 79% of the Italian population and 71% of municipalities. The results achieved confirm the maturity of the Italian aluminum packaging management model, capable of combining environmental sustainability, economic efficiency, and shared responsibility along the entire supply chain.

BPA-free cans by July 2026: beverage industry accelerates conversion

4 May 2026 eleonora News, topsyl 1627

From July 20, 2026, BPA-containing cans will be banned in the EU: the beverage industry is accelerating toward BPA-free solutions thanks to new regulations and packaging innovation.

BAN ON BPA IN CANS

The beverage industry is entering a crucial phase: by July 20, 2026, beverage cans with internal linings containing Bisphenol A (BPA) will no longer be allowed on the European market. The deadline is set by Regulation (EU) 2024/3190, which came into force on January 20, 2025, introducing a general ban on the use of BPA in food contact packaging. Manufacturers of beer, soft drinks, energy drinks, and RTD beverages are racing to upgrade their packaging technology, aiming to ensure regulatory compliance without compromising product quality and stability.

For years, Bisphenol A (BPA) has been used in the internal linings of cans to protect beverages from corrosion and spoilage. Today, following EFSA’s assessment of potential health risks, the European Union has banned its use in food packaging, forcing the industry to rapidly transition to safe alternatives.

DEADLINES FOR THE BEVERAGE SECTOR

The European regulation provides for different transition periods to allow companies to gradually adapt to the ban on BPA in food packaging. For the beverage sector, starting July 20, 2026, single-use cans with coatings containing Bisphenol A will no longer be marketed, while for sectors such as fruit and vegetables and seafood, the deadline has been extended to January 20, 2028.

A flexible period is also foreseen to dispose of stocks: cans regularly placed on the market within the deadlines can be refilled for an additional 12 months, and packaged products can remain on sale until stocks run out, encouraging a gradual transition to BPA-free solutions.

THE TECHNOLOGICAL CHALLENGE

The real challenge now is industrial. Packaging manufacturers are developing new modified polyester resins to replace traditional epoxy enamels.

For beverage brands, however, the transition is not immediate: R&D departments must verify that the new coatings are compatible with the different formulations, preserving:

  • the beverage’s organoleptic profile
  • resistance to carbonation
  • chemical stability in the presence of acidity
  • container durability

For beers, energy drinks, and soft drinks, compatibility between the liquid and the internal coating is crucial to ensuring quality and shelf life

Pet Therapy at the Rizzoli Hospital in Bologna: the Cassoli Group supports the project

15 April 2026 eleonora News 1551

Concrete help for patients facing complex treatment pathways, which the Cassoli Group has continued to support through 2026.

PET THERAPY ENTERS THE ONCOLOGY WARDS

At the Rizzoli Orthopedic Hospital in Bologna, Animal-Assisted Education (AAI) interventions bring a simple yet valuable touch to the wards: connection, presence, and attention.

The initiative is made possible thanks to the commitment of the AGITO ODV association, led by President Sabrina Bergonzoni, and the collaboration with ChiaraMilla and Dr. Marina Casciani.

The project is active in the Oncology and Spine Surgery wards of the Third Clinic, where many patients face complex, lengthy, and demanding treatment journeys.

In such a delicate moment, contact with an animal is not just a caress, but becomes a moment in which the body relaxes and the mind slows down: a few minutes of interaction helps reduce anxiety and makes the treatment journey more manageable.

THE CASSOLI GROUP’S CONTRIBUTION TO A PROJECT OF HUMAN VALUE

Among the initiative’s supporters is the Cassoli Group, which has chosen to make a concrete contribution to the project’s realization.

The company funded the activities in 2025 and has already renewed its support for 2026, confirming its focus on initiatives of high human and social value.

The strength of this initiative lies precisely in its concreteness: small gestures that, in everyday life, can make a difference. It’s a reminder that, even outside of work, corporate commitment can contribute to generating a positive impact on the community.

Kegsyl automatic keg closure system

8 April 2026 eleonora kegsyl, News 1524

The patented system transforms keg closure into a stable, hygienic, and automated process, reducing costs and labor dependency.

KEGS SEALED WITH SAFETY AND QUALITY

In the beverage sector, keg sealing represents a critical stage: it is the final step before the product enters the logistics chain and directly affects the quality, hygiene, and safety of its contents. Traditionally performed manually or semi-automatically, this operation is not always able to ensure the uniformity and stability required by modern production lines.

KEGSYL was specifically developed to address this gap. It is a compact machine, based on patented technology, that applies a heat-sealed foil directly to the neck of the keg, transforming the closure phase into a controlled, consistent, and repeatable industrial process.

How KEGSYL works:

  • Operates from a continuous aluminum coil;
  • Automatically cuts the foil according to the keg size;
  • Places the foil on the keg neck and heat-seals it;

Ensures each keg is sealed with identical precision, eliminating variability and potential errors associated with manual handling.

KEGSYL: EFFICIENCY WITHOUT COMPROMISE

In addition to ensuring high quality standards, KEGSYL also helps optimize operational costs:

  • Minimizes waste and rework;
  • Makes production times more predictable;
  • Simplifies internal logistics and material management.

This way, while the machine guarantees continuity and stability in the sealing process—making production more efficient and sustainable—personnel can focus on higher-value tasks.

With KEGSYL, keg sealing becomes a technologically advanced stage, on par with other equipment in the production line: a hygienic, safe, and fully repeatable process, perfectly aligned with the automation and quality standards required by modern industry.

Growing demand for circular packaging

24 March 2026 eleonora News 1500

The Every Can Counts 2025 report highlights increased environmental awareness and clear expectations for industry and brands.

AWARENESS AND MATERIAL CHOICE

The demand for sustainable packaging continues to grow internationally. This is according to the Global Recycling Habits and Attitudes 2025 report by Every Can Counts, presented on World Can Day. The survey, conducted among over 16,000 people in 16 countries, including Italy, highlights a growing environmental awareness among consumers: nearly 9 out of 10 respondents recognize the urgency of addressing issues such as climate change, waste pollution, and sustainable material management.

Over 70% of people consider plastic and waste a significant problem and are demanding concrete solutions along the entire supply chain. In this context, there is growing interest in materials such as aluminum, appreciated for its infinite recyclability without loss of quality and its ability to maintain the energy and economic value of the resources used over time.

THE ROLE OF CONSUMERS AND COMPANIES

The report reveals strong expectations for brands and industry: 87% demand fully or infinitely recyclable packaging.

The study also highlights a shift in the way the concept of circularity is interpreted. For one in two people, circular packaging is packaging that, once recycled, returns to its original function. In line with this vision, 57% of respondents consider packaging designed to be reused in the same production cycle, such as aluminum cans, to be truly recyclable.

At the same time, an information gap emerges: only 17% of respondents currently identify cans as the most recyclable packaging. This figure highlights the need to strengthen information and awareness about material recycling. The report also confirms a shared responsibility throughout the supply chain: more than half attribute consumers the primary role in proper recycling, but industry, brands, waste management, and institutions remain key players. It is no coincidence that 87% of people believe that companies and manufacturers should be required to use fully recyclable packaging or packaging made from recycled materials.
